Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF)

An exciting new biotechnology in bone grafting is known as Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF).  Human blood is made of red blood cells (which carry oxygen to the body), white blood cells (which fight infections) and plasma (which is mostly the liquid part of blood).   Think of it as chicken noodle soup, and plasma is the broth:  full of all the juices and seasonings that flavor the soup.

Growth factors are proteins in blood that promote formation of bone and tissues, literally helping growth. Scientists have learned to separate, out of a patient’s own blood, plasma, which is rich in innate growth factors (thus PRGF), mix it with bone biomaterials, and graft it directly into favorable sites. These PRGF-enhanced bone grafts are better accepted by the body because they carry the patient’s own growth factors which exist naturally in blood to promote healing and fight infection.
